The Medical Royal Colleges have wrestled with the challenges of maintaining high standards of post graduate medical training in the UK whilst working hours of Doctors in Training reduce. Whilst the notion that very long working hours equates to good training has largely been dispelled there remain many challenges ahead in ensuring that the Doctors of the future have the same high levels of knowledge and skills as those at the top of the profession today. Reports by the Conference of Postgraduate Medical Education Deans (COPMED) have shown that it is possible to continue to ensure that Doctors in Training receive high quality training if all available training opportunities are used and that the way in which services are delivered changes to accommodate their learning opportunities.
