Royal Surrey County Hospital

Project Organisation

Introduction

In July 2006, the Royal Surrey County Hospital commenced a project to redesign various workstreams to facilitate compliance with the European Working Time Directive 2009, in order to reduce junior doctor hours.

Goals

Project aims include:

  • Sustainably reduce hours and intensity of junior doctor workload to achieve 2009 WTD compliance
  • Extending roles for non-medical staff.

How they intend to bring about change

The Royal Surrey have created a multidisciplinary project board, with five committees (workstreams) investigating each area of change:

  • Emergency
  • Non-emergency
  • Medicines management
  • Nurse led pre-assessment
  • Nurse led discharge.

They have recently engaged junior doctor support through appointing junior doctor representatives to each of the workstreams.
