Challenges & objectives

Challenges

The staffing levels at Stepping Hill do not support a middle grade rota. The consultants join the rota to make it a 1:5 on-call rota, this rota is not WTD 2009 compliant. To enable the modernising and customising of the Urology service for patients, specialist nurses will be able to undertake extended roles at Macclesfield Hospital and in the community settings. This will release existing medical staff for appropriate training and provide more effective out of hours cover.

Specific objectives of the pilot

  • Financial sustainability
  • Dedicated training and educational sessions for doctors
  • Extension of urological services on a hub and spoke basis
  • A patient focused service with a well established and engaged user group/li>
  • The use of specialist nurses undertaking extended roles at Macclesfield Hospital and in the community settings

For patients who are admitted to hospital this way of working will mean:

  • Clear pathways and intended outcomes
  • Management of planned care by appropriately qualified health professionals
  • Improved learning for junior doctors and an improved culture of joint working.

Delivering compliance

Stockport's approach will see:

  • Formation of new teams and structures to deliver the services
  • Planning of new services, care pathways and structures to deliver care and WTD compliance
  • Clear data collection of evidence around care patterns and areas where change is required.
