Countess of Chester Hospital

Phase 2

Minor specialty compliance and partnership working

The original COCH Teamworking, handover and escalation pilot ran from June 2006 until June 2007. The project offered rationalisation of junior doctor hours through an extension of their Hospital at Night model and development of divisional competency frameworks, policies and patient pathways.

The successes of the project include:

  • Banding savings identified of £564k
  • Estimated net cost of investment £230k
  • 15 WTE additional staff identified
  • 65% compliance with action plans in place to achieve 90% compliant rotas
  • Multidisciplinary team working
  • Improved leadership skills for doctors in training

It is the minor specialties which are still not compliant and present most difficulty. These include Ophthalmology and SPRs within ENT and Plastics. Chester are looking to further develop a partnership approach and formulating rota’s with their neighboring trusts.

This additional work programme will run from January 2008 – March 2008.
