EWTD Retirement Project

There is much anecdotal evidence surrounding the retirement trends of the medical workforce and the impacts these may have on workforce planning and health service delivery. This workstream intends to investigate these trends and assess the anecdotal evidence. This project has been carried out by the Workforce Review Team (WRT) and commissioned by the Working Time Directive Stakeholder Group. General practitioners are not included in this report as they are not covered by the WTD.

Project Objectives

• To provide a discussion on retirement rates and the retirement characteristics of the medical workforce (literature review)
• To examine the past and current positions (data review)
• To model future retirement projections of the medical consultant workforce utilising a range of scenarios (eg, specialty, geographical area)
