RCS/RCOA WTD press release

Royal College of Surgeons of England/Royal College of Anaesthetists joint pilot project

The report by the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) and the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCOA) on WTD - Implications and Practical Suggestions to Achieve Compliance is now available

Overview
The RCS and RCOA have undertaken a research project in two distinct phases. The first phase aimed to describe how surgical and anaesthesia services are attempting to meet the requirements of WTD 2009; the second phase involved the evaluation of the information received, and the formulation of appropriate advice and validated examples of good practice.

Project was completed in 2008

Challenges
It is accepted that achieving WTD 2009 compliance in craft specialties such as surgery and anaesthetics is particularly challenging. The colleges are each attempting to help fellows and members achieve compliance whilst protecting patient safety, education, training and service delivery. The aim of the joint project between the RCS and the RCOA was to identifying good practice and help the craft specialties to achieve compliance.

Specific benefits of the pilot:

  • Identify appropriate units/specialties to study (a cross-section of unit sizes and specialties incorporating those units making good progress towards compliance and those displaying signs of difficulty)
  • Identify aspects of staffing, training and service delivery in those units to ascertain obstacles to achieving compliance and good practice
  • Involve the specialty associations, training committees, postgraduate deans and schools of surgery etc to identify and share good practice
  • Through the use of structured questionnaires, interviews and focus groups, obtain and validate information upon which to base advice and support for craft specialty compliance
  • Formulate and disseminate advice and guidance to surgeons, anaesthetists, hospital management, service planners, commissioners, deans, etc.

Delivery of compliance
The project started in November 2007 and was completed in 2008.
