Royal Liverpool Children's NHS Trust scoop BUPA Patient Safety award

The BUPA Foundation Patient Safety award has this year been presented to the Royal Liverpool Children's NHS Trust's multidisciplinary team who piloted an observation tool to identify children ‘at risk of deterioration’ on the wards. Processes were changed to allow the existing medical & surgical teams to respond promptly to those children, rather than use a new team like a critical care outreach team or medical emergency team. Early identification and treatment of these ‘at risk’ patients reduced the usage of critical care beds.

The BUPA Foundation awards provide a unique way of recognising and rewarding researchers' previous work as well as 'seeding' follow-on studies if appropriate, or piloting work in a new direction prompted by the successful project.

The trust is one of several Skills for Health - Workforce Projects Team pilot sites commissioned to look at different ways to achieve WTD 2009 compliance.

The pilot started in July 2007 and will be complete in 2008. To look at how they intend to meet the requirement and to gain more information about the Paediatric Early Warning Tool visit
