Royal College of Surgeons and Royal College of Anaesthetists WTD report
The Royal College of Anaesthetists and The Royal College of Surgeons of England have been collaborating on a joint project to produce suggestions and recommendations for becoming WTD 2009 compliant.
Information has been gathered from trusts who have already achieved 2009 compliance. A series of case studies have been discussed by working groups with strong clinical membership from trusts who are not yet compliant, to formulate a series of suggestions for compliance that are feasible in different circumstances. Expert panels made up of representatives from national organisations such as deaneries, NHS employers, specialty associations, trainee associations and patient liaison groups have also been consulted. They have offered their comments and recommendations on what would comprise the most useful solutions.
The outcome is a series of suggestions and recommendations which are practical and flexible for differing circumstances within trusts and have endorsement from the Royal Colleges and national organisations. It is acknowledged that there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution.
The key messages alongside suggested solutions will be that patient safety is paramount and should inform all planning and any changes, and that trusts should begin planning immediately in order to be compliant by August 2009. Trusts who were already compliant indicated that it had taken between six to twelve months to achieve compliance. This included time for planning, implementation and ironing out any problems that arose.
The report is currently in the final stages of preparation and will be available by the end of November 2008.
