NHS Confederation broadcasts live plenary sessions in 'Second Life'
On Friday 12th March, 'Jenmc Dover' aka Jenny McCallum of Workforce Projects Team, attended three live plenary sessions at the NHS Confederation Annual Conference and Exhibition, from the comfort of her own desk.
A team at Imperial College London has developed a virtual 'National Health Service' on a piece of land in the growing virtual world of Second Life. After being ‘flown’ as a virtual attendee to the conference plenary sessions, Jenny simply had to plug in her earphones and click the link on the conference website. Attendees could take part in discussions via text-chat and the live feed was broadcast on a main screen.
Jenny said: 'The benefit of holding the sessions in Second Life was that attendees could choose the session they were interested in. It was completely free of charge and attendees could spare just an hour out of their time rather than an entire day with costly delegate fees and travel.'
45 people registered to attend the sessions in Second Life, and this could be ever-increasing in future for events in the healthcare sector and potentially for junior doctors looking to maximise education time whilst working to EWTD compliant rotas.
