On 3rd November 2009 Skills for Health - Workforce Projects Team, in collaboration with NHS Employers, the Medical Royal Colleges and NHS Professionals, released the Medical Training Initiative (MTI) Guide to trusts interested in pursuing ethical international recruitment opportunities.
Since its release the number of international doctors taking up placements in the UK has grown considerably with over 170* placements now established. * Latest MTI statistics, NHS Employers 22/01/10
The MTI is designed to allow overseas doctors to undertake up to two years of training and experience in the UK before returning home. The initiative is already assisting NHS employers with recruitment and fostering exchange programmes.
Tim Lund, divisional manager at Skills for Health said:
"The MTI guide has been well received and we are delighted that trusts are making use of the advice, information and contacts contained in it. The UK has an excellent reputation for quality healthcare and training and this belief is emphasised by the rapid growth in international doctors taking up placements."
Dr Ahmed Enlagger, who featured in one of the case studies in the guide further comments on his experience. He says:
"I am really enjoying my time here in the UK. The training programme is very well organised and structured... building doctor/patient relationships, including counselling, is one of the best clinical skills that you can gain from training in the UK. All of my consultants are supportive, knowledgeable and keen to guide me during my training. I owe a lot to
them and of course the team I work with are so helpful. Words are not enough to express how I am enjoying my experience."
