Multidisciplinary healthcare teams now have free access to the very latest software to manage clinical priority right at their fingertips.

HaNBleep was released in February and enables staff working as part of a Hospital at Night (HaN) team to accept and interact with calls generated from the wards. This allows the right information to be made available to ensure staff with suitable skills can get to patients quickly. The system uses wireless technology on personal digital assistants (PDAs) which are carried by the team.

The software, which can be downloaded at no charge from Skills for Health - Workforce Projects Team's healthcare workforce portal, gives healthcare teams the option to manage clinical priority, generate, manage and prioritise calls, as well as pass on patient observations to appropriate team members.

HaNBleep is based on the award winning iBleep software developed at South Tees NHS Trust, having been re-engineered to use the latest web application framework, ASP.NET. Produced by Microsoft, ASP.NET means HaNBleep benefits from improved performance, security and reliability.

The source code of the program is also being made available to trusts, giving them the opportunity to fully configure HaNBleep exactly to their needs, plus make their own developments to the software in the future. Workforce Projects Team is also producing a Wikipedia-like knowledge base to support implementation, operation and development in trusts.

Some of the main benefits of HaNBleep include:

  • Better communication of clinical information between wards and clinical staff, ensuring patients are appropriately prioritised and seen by the right person at the right time
  • HaNBleep impacts on patient safety by reducing interruptions from conventional bleeps when attending to a patient. Clinical information can be shared with the HaN team without clinical staff members leaving the bedside
  • Provides auditable data of every call generated, allowing analysis of types of call, activity trends and the workload of HaN/out of hours teams.

HaNBleep will be showcased along with a range of information technology solutions on the Workforce Projects Team stand (C28) at the Patient Safety Congress on 30th April 2009.
