Hello and welcome to a very special 11th edition of Calling Time, featuring a focus on the highly successful third annual Working Time Directive (WTD) exhibition.

As you read this, we are officially less than one year away from the implementation of the final stage of the directive in August 2009, with the WTD exhibition at the ExCeL exhibition centre marking ‘the final countdown’. Around 250 delegates from across the UK flocked to the event at London’s Docklands on 2nd July to hear about and learn from the latest information and good practice.

Lynne Greenwood spent the day at the exhibition, her report begins on page six. This includes our keynote speaker Professor Sir George Alberti’s thoughts on the countdown to August 2009. It also focuses on how the Royal Colleges are supporting compliance, the solutions to meet WTD tested by our pilot sites, plus the legal implications of the directive.

Additionally, we are continuing our preparations for the annual Hospital at Night conference, taking place on 19th September at the QEII Conference Centre, London. More than 300 delegates from a host of healthcare sector backgrounds are expected on the day, when the theme will be ‘Making Hospital at Night Mainstream and Beyond’. It will look at the benefits of the concept, best and new practices, how different organisations apply the methodolgy, plus the benefits realisation.

Calling Time 12 will be a Hospital at Night special, featuring a full review of the conference.
