A warm welcome to the 14th edition of Calling Time.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the Calling Time survey in January and February. The results provided a useful insight into the way that Calling Time has helped you in your projects, whether that has been through idea generation from other organisations, support for projects with trust boards or simply through the realisation that you are not alone in the challenges that you have faced in working towards EWTD 2009. We will continue to support you and provide you with pertinent information in the final countdown.

As we get closer to the August deadline, EWTD 2009 is coming to the forefront. You will be seeing more and more news stories on the subject and may be wondering what you can do to meet the directive. Our EWTD 2009 programme continues to demonstrate innovative ways of achieving compliance and we will be issuing reference guides to help services that are working towards full implementation and of course the healthcare workforce portal is constantly being updated with the latest news and information.

The projects and activities which have been going on as a result of the EWTD have shown that innovative approaches to skill usage and new ways of working have proved successful. Traditional views and attitudes to roles in the medical profession have had to be challenged.

With a focus on the human resource issues of the Directive, this issue of Calling Time contains articles on the 2007/8 PMETB/COPMeD survey of junior doctors as well as the latest on nursing roles and their support for EWTD 2009. As always if you need further information or resources please contact us
