Workforce planning in pathology toolkit

Through the Chief Scientific Officer's Office, the Department of Health has commissioned a free tool to support workforce planning in pathology.

Its main aim is to log what the scientific workforce currently does in individual pathology services, and to help managers to model changes to its profile when

  • Demand for tests varies
  • Work is redesigned, or the competence required to do it is reassessed
  • Improvements in productivity are achieved.

The tool will record the work done by all the ‘standard’ departments in the service: biochemistry, haematology, histopathology, microbiology, virology, immunology and cytology. And it will also set out the activities of the support, administrative and central departments, such as those that cover the central reception of samples, the control of infection, and the blood bank.

The tool was launched at the Congress Centre in London on Thursday 30 October 2008 by Professor Sue Hill.
