You can access this and all our other e-learning resources by logging into our e-learning suite. If you are not already a user you can register today, it’s free and easy to do so. Click here to access our e-learning suite. There is around an hour and a half of learning material within the programme which is broken into a series of six modules (one for each of the six steps to workforce planning). You can work through the guide as an educational resource at your own pace, or refer to it as a best practice guide when developing plans in the future. Each of the six steps has an audio commentary from expert speakers in the fields of workforce planning or maternity services.

The six steps are:

  1. Defining the plan: lays the foundation for the plan by describing the context of the plan in your organisation
  2. Visioning the future: looks at the forces which will act on your organisation that will affect your service and what you can and can't control
  3. Assessing demand: assesses how your changing environment will affect future demand for your services and hence future staffing needs
  4. Assessing supply: estimates the number and type of staff available now and in the future
  5. Developing an action plan: looks at the gaps between your current and future requirements and current and future supply, and how you might bridge those gaps
  6. Implementation and review: looks ahead to the factors that will ensure the success of the plan and keep it on track into the future.
