NWG - System Reform in England 23/5/2006
In December 2005 the Department of Health published an important report “Health reform in England – update and next steps” describing the process of health system reform so far, re-stating the vision and purpose of the reform programme, and setting out the remaining policy design issues to be completed .

This event was an important opportunity for NWG members to gain an overview of current policy and to discuss the combined effect of these changes upon the workforce. Members were also able to debate the impact of these changes in the light of experience gained through an example of whole system change to deliver case management in Greater Manchester.

Speakers
Ian Dodge is Director of Policy and Strategy for the Department of Health, working on the 1997 New NHS White Paper; he was Bill Principal for the Health Act 1999, and Private Secretary to John Denham and then John Hutton. Ian was Head of Primary Care Contracting 2001-2004, overseeing the expansion of PMS, the creation of APMS, and with the NHS Confederation, the development and initial implementation of the new GMS contract. In 2004-2005 Ian worked in the Recovery and Support Unit, before spending 8 months as the PM's Senior Policy Advisor on Health between May 2005 and January 2006.

Madeline Harding is Programme Director for the Association of Greater Manchester PCTs, responsible for co-ordinating the implementation of case management and management of long term conditions across the 14 PCTs. She has a clinical background as a dentist, and worked in general practice, hospital and community dental services specialising in the care of older people and individuals with physical handicaps and learning disabilities.

This meeting was open to NWG members and English Postgraduate Deans.
