Rota Design Workshops

Building on the success of a series of rota design workshops held in 2008 and the launch of the Showcasing New and Extended Roles series of resources, Skills for Health – Workforce Projects team (formerly NHS National Workforce Projects) commissioned an additional five national workshops, aimed at supporting skills development for key staff involved in assisting trusts to design WTD 2009 compliant rotas. The workshops, delivered by workforce leads from the Workforce Programmes Team at NHS East of England and the Workforce Review Team, were held at venues in London, Manchester, Leeds and Bristol at the beginning of the year and focused on:

  • The principle characteristics of good rota design, taking into account recommendations from Royal Colleges
  • Working pattern choices - matching suitability
  • Resources available to support rota design
  • Examples of approaches adopted by trusts to support compliance
  • Building information to develop robust rotas
  • How to incorporate new role solutions
  • Developing an options appraisal approach to building solutions for the trust.

Key findings from the benefits evaluation report produced following delivery of the workshops include:

  • The workshops were perceived as bringing benefit to the majority of delegates, enabling fresh areas of knowledge, useful tools and practical applications to be shared
  • 81% of delegates indicated a strong intention to transfer learning to their operational setting.
