New and Extended Roles

Introduction

The development of new and extended roles is a key enabler to achieving Working Time Directive compliance. However, these roles will have a life beyond the 2009 target in supporting the implementation of other major policy drivers in the NHS.

The introduction of new and extended roles has changed the composition of the NHS workforce. These roles cross traditional professional boundaries bringing benefits to patients and staff.

  • Meeting key targets e.g. Working time Directive compliance
  • Increasing the flow of patients on the 18-week pathways
  • Improving access to the services and quality of care
  • Enhancing career prospects and improving retention of staff
  • Addressing staff shortfalls in difficult to recruit areas
  • Providing more choice for the NHS providers and patients
  • Increasing capacity by transferring unnecessary tasks
