National Priorities
The Next Stage Review led by Lord Darzi is the latest in a series of developments of the NHS that aim to put the patient at the centre of the healthcare system. Organisations will need to take account of these changes in developing the flexible, affordable and sustainable workforce to deliver the high quality care to patients.
Workforce Projects Team aims to analyse the latest policy developments, highlight the workforce planning implications and signpost good practice examples and resources that will help organisations meet the challenge of developing a workforce that is flexible, affordable and meets the needs of the service in years to come.
As well as highlighting the implications of the policy the section will integrate with the wider Workforce Projects Team tools and resources to ensure organisations not only understand the issues associated with the policy but can undertake the next practical steps to plan the workforce of the future.
Workforce Projects Team has a range of projects currently in development as well as a range of projects that have already delivered key lessons from the 18 Week Patient Pathway and maternity services.
Child Health
The care of children at all stages of their development is a key element of health policy. Recent initiatives such as the Next Stage Review and the Maternity Matters policy document have highlighted the need for integrated care that crosses organisational boundaries. These policy leads with be strengthened with the publication of the new children’s policy paper in the near future.
This section of the healthcare workforce portal brings together all our current resources on maternity and childcare across the different workforce project team areas of work. This section will be developed in 2009 to reflect policy launches and developments.
The Maternity section outlines the impact of the Maternity Matters policy launched in April 2007. The policy contains a series of national guarantees on choice within maternity services. All NHS organisations will have to implement these guarantees by 2009. There is an urgent need for workforce planning principles to be applied to maternity services so that changes can be made in preparation for the implementation of Maternity Matters.
The Maternity section includes the workforce planning resource pack and an e-learning CD to assist in planning the workforce that were developed to meet the challenges of the new policy. This section also includes the learning from a series of workshops that ran in 2007.
Long Term Conditions
Supporting, caring for, and treating people with long term conditions will be the dominant theme for health and social care services in the first half of the 21st century. A stronger emphasis on self care, the rapid expansion of case management and new approaches to disease management will influence working practice throughout primary, community secondary and voluntary sectors.

In addition the section will contain specialty specific areas for more detailed analysis and signposting of resources based on the groupings from the Next Stage Review and operational framework.
