WTD Stakeholder Group discourage the use of the 7 x 13 hour shift pattern
Since the Working Time Regulations were introduced, much work has taken place to look at optimum shift patterns that can ensure that the directive is achieved and that quality service provision and training for junior doctors is maintained. With the requirement to move towards a 48 hour week by 2009 this will become even more important. One solution that some hospitals have adopted has been the 7 x 13 hour shift pattern but whilst this can meet the requirements of the directive, trusts are now being actively discouraged from using this shift pattern by the WTD Stakeholder Group.

Risk Assessment for Commissioning 2006
The Workforce Review Team held its third annual Risk Assessment for Commissioning (RAC) conference on 1 November 2006 in London. Supported by over 70 representatives from all 10 SHAs in workforce planning, commissioning and finance, the event focused on workforce challenges facing the NHS, shared examples of actions currently in practice and examined WRT's recommendations. More information on this event is now available on the healthcare workforce portal, including Workforce Alignment Tool data.

British Heart Foundation Project
To assist the valuable work of the British Heart Foundation, WRT and Tangerine Bee (an independent intelligence gathering organisation) teamed up to work on a project which investigated the future training needs and workforce requirements for the cardiac physiologist group and the impact on the wider workforce across the United Kingdom. The project looked at three key areas: recruitment and retention; training gaps and issues and workforce modelling.

PET-CT Project
As part of the Government's commitment to achieving the 31 and 62 day cancer waiting time targets, an expansion in the number of positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) sites in England is planned over the next 18 months. In support of this WRT was commissioned to carry out a project to research and evaluate the workforce elements required to successfully meet the needs of the planned expansion of PET-CT services. The report is now available on the healthcare workforce portal.

Long Term Conditions (LTC) Workforce Development Resource Pack Evaluation Survey
Supporting, caring for, and treating people with long term conditions is one of the dominant themes for health and social care services. During 2006 the Workforce Projects Team held a number of workshops across the country introducing a resource pack to help guide workforce development in this area. If you attended any of the workshops, or if you've discovered the resource pack since, we're now gathering your opinions on its content and relevance.
