Catherine Simm– Workforce Transformation Manager

As a generalist human resources manager in a primary care trust (PCT) with 'bolted on' responsibilities for workforce planning, I was keen to undertake a formal programme of study to equip me with the relevant skills and knowledge in this specialist area. I had received little training prior to this apart from the odd workshop event put on by the strategic health authority (SHA) and I had little in the way of hands on experience.

In contrast, many of the other students on the programme were experienced workforce planners working at quite a senior level. At times this felt difficult but it turned out to be one of the best things about the programme as I learned so much from the other students in the group. By the end of the programme I had gained a real insight into workforce issues on a regional and national level and had exposure to a variety of different approaches.

The assignments were challenging and the formal 'taught' element of the course was smaller than I first envisaged. However, the quality of the tutors and guest speakers has been excellent. Most of the learning was distance learning but the one to one support from Thames Valley University tutors was second to none. Despite the fact that I was very much a 'beginner' I coped well with this assignments and the programme overall. So much so that it really captured my interest and enthusiasm and I developed a real passion for the issues covered. This led me to apply for and be offered the post of workforce transformation manager at a large Acute Trust. There is no doubt in my mind that if it hadn't been for this course I would not have secured this appointment so for me the programme has been truly 'transformational'. I am looking forward to being able to use the knowledge and skills I have gained from the programme and applying them in the workplace. The role is varied and involves looking at working differently, role redesign and systems reengineering, working in partnership across organisational and professional boundaries with staff, senior managers, clinicians and staff side representatives with the ultimate aim of improving patient experience.
