Providing credible tools that support local decision making around workforce planning is a key requirement to effective workforce planning. NWP has identified the need for a number of tools to support users deliver a workforce that will match NHS priorities. More details about some of these tools - including delivery dates - are available below.

An Excel based tool that assesses the current workforce availability and forecasts future implications based on certain supply variables including sickness, absence, retirement, participation rates, bank and agency, FTE utilisation. The tool has been developed in collaboration with users and will be available on the healthcare workforce portal in April 2008.

A rewrite and refresh of the Six Step Guide to Workforce Planning is currently underway and will be available from April 2008. The new integrated guide will include practical case study examples from a number of organisations.

The Working Time Directive 2009 Exhibition: The Final Countdown will take place on the 2nd July 2008 at the ICC, Birmingham. A new approach to disseminating the learning, this event will be interactive and delegates will have the opportunity to ask direct questions to all of the exhibitors throughout the day. Key presentations will also be given, speakers to be announced soon. The 2007 conference attracted an audience of over 250 delegates from across the service took away practical advice on reaching the 2009 requirement. NWP has commissioned the development of a Mental Health Workforce Benchmarking Database, to go alongside the PCT and Acute Databases that are available on the NWP portal. The Mental Health Database will be available on the healthcare workforce portal in July 2008.

Development of a web-enabled balanced scorecard is underway which assists users to evaluate changes in workforce practice based on a number of perspectives. The user can set goals and measures and the scorecard will calculate a clear trend analysis and map performance against the agreed tolerances. The tool will be available in June 2008.

Presentations and audio webcasts are now available - from our second workforce planning masterclass 'Workforce planning across a plurality of providers' - for you to download from the healthcare workforce portal.

The final masterclass 'Commissioning education to provide the workforce to meet current and future service need' takes place on 5th March.

NWP ran two strategic level masterclasses about the workforce issues relating to meeting the 18 week wait target. Held in Manchester and London, the masterclasses attracted colleagues from across healthcare.
